Neo Freerunner FAQ

Is it ready to use as a phone?

It can be used to make phone calls and send/receive SMS. But the initial software is quite spartanic so that it neither compares to a cheap standard phone nor to an elaborated smartphone. But it is a platform so that you can install tons of already available Software.

2007.8 and 2008.8 are distributions provided by Openmoko
There is also a Qtopia image by Trolltech
Recently, full Debian and Gentoo distributions became available

How can I upgrade/update the software?

You can use dfu-util (on MacOSX: Openmoko Flasher ) and the USB cable to install a completely new system. To upgrade to the latest build, just use ssh over USB, enable your desktop system as a router and do 'opkg upgrade'.

The Freerunner is completely dead. Is it warranty?

If the battery is deeply discharged (it may still show 3.7V), the Freerunner won't start even if connected to the power supply. Therefore it remains deeply discharged. The simple trick how to revitalize is currently evaluated. The more complicated is to use a second battery (that is not completely discharged) or to recharge the battery in an older Nokia mobile phone (e.g. 6230i)

How do I start GPS?

As a first GUI tool you should 'opkg install openmoko-agpsui gpsd'. Then update the file /etc/default/gpsd. Please refer to http://wiki.openmoko.org/wiki/GPS#GTA02 GPS for details.
